Lithuanian Adoption

Referral Process:  Once the adoption dossier is completed the file is submitted to the Lithuanian Adoption Agency (similar with the Adoption Committee in Romania). The referral takes up to 2 years for placement. The parents will receive pictures, medical information and a videotape of the child before traveling abroad. Similar with the Romanian program, the medical evaluation is received in the US before the parents travel abroad. A US pediatrician can assess the screening of the child’s medical information and video before the adoption procedures start.

International travel is mandatory: Parents have several options:

-         Both parents travel for 3-4 weeks, are present for the adoption hearing and personally sign for the issuance of the passport. Then the parents travel to Poland for the child’s visa and bring the child home.

-         Both parents travel for the adoption hearing, but only one parent stays for the passport and visa.

-         Both parents travel for the adoption hearing return home, and when the procedures are completed one or both parents travel back for the passport and visa.

Child’s Visa: Like in the Ukrainian program the child’s visa is issued in Warsaw, Poland.

Foster care is not available for the Lithuanian program.
