1. My dog is purebred. How do I get her registered with the AKC?
Unless both of her parents are registered with the AKC AND her breeder registered the litter with the AKC, you cannot register your dog, even if she is purebred. If her parents ARE registered and the litter was registered by the breeder, you will need your dog's "AKC Dog Registration Application" (often referred to as the "Blue Slip") from the breeder. This form must be signed by the breeder, filled out completely, and sent to the AKC along with the appropriate fee (currently $10). There are time limits on registration so you should take care of this promptly.

2. My dog is going to have puppies. What do I need to do?
In order for the puppies to be registered with the AKC, both parents must be AKC registered (dogs with Limited Registration are excluded) and of the same breed. You will need to complete a Litter Registration Application (available from the AKC or click here to download form. Use you browser's Back button to return to this page.) after the puppies are born. This application must be signed by all owners of your bitch and by all the owners of the stud dog. The completed form is then sent to the AKC along with the appropriate fee (currently $20). You will receive from the AKC an AKC Dog Registration Application for each puppy. This application, often called a Blue Slip must be completed and signed by all owners of your bitch, and by the puppy's new owners, and sent to the AKC along with the appropriate fee (currently $10).

3. My dog is the father of a litter of puppies. Is there any paperwork I need to do?
Yes. A Litter Registration Application (available from the AKC or click here to download form. Use you browser's Back button to return to this page.) must be completed by the owner(s) of the puppies mother (known as the breeder) and signed by both the breeder(s) and by you. This should be done after the puppies are born but early enough that the application can be processed by the AKC before the puppies leave for their new homes.

4. I adopted my dog from the Humane Society and know nothing about her background. She looks purebred to me. Can I get her registered?
No. Only dogs from registered litters with registered parents are eligible for registration. However you may be able to get an ILP Number.

5. What is an ILP Number and how can I get one for my dog?
Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP) Numbers can be obtained for purebred dogs who cannot be registered with the AKC. If your dog is, to the best of your knowledge, purebred and of a breed recognized by the AKC or a breed eligible to compete in the Miscellaneous Class in AKC shows you can apply for an ILP Number. You must obtain an application from the AKC (or click here to download form. Use you browser's Back button to return to this page.) and then return the completed form along with photos of the dog and the appropriate fee (currently $25) to the AKC. A dog with an ILP Number is eligible to compete in AKC obedience, tracking, herding, lure coursing, hunting tests, earthdog, and agility events and Junior Showmanship. The offspring of a dog with an ILP number are NOT eligible for AKC registration.

6. My dog's papers say "Limited Registration". What does this mean?
Limited registration means your dog is purebred and registered with the AKC. He may compete in AKC obedience, tracking and agility events. However his offspring are NOT eligible for AKC registration and a dog with a limited registration may not be shown in conformation shows or field trials.

7. My dog is AKC registered. Does that mean she is show quality?
Not necessarily. AKC registration is not an indicator of quality. Only a very small percentage of AKC registered dogs are of show or breeding quality. A reputable and knowledgeable breeder will honestly evaluate his puppies and sell only the very best as show quality. Only a very knowledgeable breeder or dog show judge will be able to tell you if your dog is show quality.
