2002 Softball

This season was our first that we didn't play in Jackson.  We joined the Monday Night league in Germantown and also secured a new sponsor, The Union Station.  The Germantown field is not homer friendly as you can see in the stats below. Perennial home run hitters like Tom, Leroy and Larry hit many deep fly balls that resulted in outs. We were in the middle of the pack by mid-season when we went on a tear winning four straight games, and ended up placing second.  Our final game was an 18-17 heartbreaker that we were leading 17-12 into the 7th inning. That would've tied us for first. Despite the down individual stats, some players had good seasons.  I will cite Paul Stanowsky who had a great season at the plate and as our shortstop.  Not many teams have a 5'6" 240 lb. guy playing SS.  In fairness to Paulie, he has shed some of that weight. Again Larry had a super season and was our biggest run producer.  He also manned left center field for me as I recovered from my knee surgery.  I sat out the first four games, then began to play as EH and worked my way into the outfield by mid-season. I could only run at about 60% of my usual speed. Defensively, Leroy had a good season playing third base, along with Paulie at shortstop and Bradd made some great catches in left field. Also, hats off to Gabe who played one game at catcher and made an unbelieveable play.  On a grounder to third, the throw got past Tom at first.  Gabe was right behind backing up the play and gunned down a runner who tried to get to third on the play. I should also mention Paul Wenzel who played with us when we needed an extra player. Not bad to have a former professional softball player as a backup.  At age 50, he can still play a great shortstop and can pound the ball harder than most any other player in the league.  We will most likely return to Germantown again next year.
