Meet the Maestro

Ralph Lane, Director and Conductor. The conducting debut of our music director, Ralph Lane, took place on September 19, 1960, in Regensburg, Germany, and was quickly followed by concerts in Cologne, Bremen, Hamburg, Copenhagen and other European centers. Returning to the United States, he served terms as principal conductor of numerous orchestras in the East and Midwest, including the Wheaton Summer Symphony (now the Wheaton Symphony Orchestra) for twenty years, focused on 19th and 20th century works for large orchestra by such composers as Bruckner, Mahler, Strauss, and Debussy, and also directed the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra (Hinsdale, Illinois) for ten years, performing the symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky and others. These concerts included several world premieres and a preponderance of 20th century works. Also, Mr. Lane: • Has guest conducted the Racine Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra (for a full season), the Arlington (Virginia) Symphony, and many of the Chicago regional orchestras: North Side Symphony, Lakeshore Symphony Orchestra, Evanston Symphony Orchestra, etc. • Has opera experience which includes five years as conductor and music director of Opera Racine, which he founded in 1977. • Trained as a hornplayer with Max Pottag of the Chicago Symphony and with Morris Secon and Verne Reynolds of the Eastman School of Music. While at Eastman, Mr. Lane played for several seasons in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, a major professional orchestra, and served as a teacher and officer of the Eastman School of Music. • Taught at State University of New York/Geneseo, Notre Dame University, and Lawrence University of Wisconsin, where he was Dean of the Conservatory of Music and Professor of Music. • Holds the degrees: Bachelor of Arts (History) from Rochester; Juris Doctor (Law) from Harvard; and Master of Music from the Eastman School, where he also completed additional graduate studies in musicology, theory, and conducting. His conducting teachers included Herman Genhart and Willis Page at Eastman and Richard Lert (formerly principal conductor of the Berlin Staatsoper) at the American Symphony Orchestra League’s Conductors’ Institute. • Was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Symphony Orchestra League in 1975 and served for several years as Vice Chair of its Board. • Founded Philharmonia Racine in 1999 and Milwaukee Summer Philharmonia in 2004, and continues in service as its conductor and music director. His guest conducting also continues, scheduled most recently for Florida in October 2003.

Meet the Concertmistress

Amy Norovich, Concertmistress for both Philharmonias, was Concertmistress for the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra for 2002-2004, and is a magnificent pianist. She started attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004.

Flutist

Rose Van Himbergen plays flute and piccolo in Wisconsin orchestras, teaches flute and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Flute Performance from UW-Milwaukee. Rose Van Himbergen, Appleton.

Hornist

Elizabeth Sievert plays French horn in Wisconsin orchestras and teaches horn in Milwaukee. Elizabeth has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Horn Performance from the UW-Milwaukee and is currently pursing her Masters degree. Elizabeth Sievert, 414-550-1210, Milwaukee.

Cellist

Sue Janke, plays cello since 1963, taught music in the public schools, plays in the Menomonee Falls Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Summer Philharmonia, Philharmonia Racine and Kettle Moraine Symphony. Bachelor of Music Degree. Milwaukee.

Cellist

Carol Gottschlich, also plays Cello in the Menomonee Falls Symphony Orchestra and Kettle Moraine Symphony. Milwaukee.

Violinist

Stephanie Young has been a Philharmonia Racine soloist playing Mendelssohn Concerto for Violin in E minor. She enjoys playing the violin and is in a string quartet.

Bassoonist

Keith MacGaffey, plays bassoon with the Menomonee Falls Symphony Orchestra and other groups; and is a Doctor. Menomonee Falls.

Bassoonist

Amber Oosterwaal plays bassoon in many Wisconsin orchestras, has a Master's Degree in Bassoon Performance from UW-Milwaukee, and is the Program Manager for the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra. She was a soloist with the Philharmonia Racine playing von Weber Concerto for Bassoon in F, Op.75. (Amber Lewis was married in 2004).

Percussionist

Dan Lawitts plays percussion in many musical groups, arranges and composes orchestral music, and has a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from State University of New York at Fredonia.

Trumpet

Dale Elenich has played trumpet with several orchestras, jazz, salsa and Polka bands throughout southeast Wisconsin. In addition, for various radio and commercial work, he has performed in numerous Broadway shows and has done studio work with several groups.

Viola

Alissa Kortendick enjoys music and has played viola with the Orchestra for the performance of the Stamitz Concerto for Viola No.1 in D, Op.1.

Cello Soloist

Laura Zimmermann , the young Racine cellist whose recent solo performance with the Racine Symphony Orchestra has been widely acclaimed, was our soloist in a movement of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major. Ms. Zimmermann, a Prairie School student and volleyball player, studies cello in the studio of Trischa Loebl. This is her second season as principal cellist of Philharmonia Racine.

Piano Soloist

Steven Ayers teaches piano students in association with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and has studied piano at Indiana University, from which he holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees, and at UW-Madison.

Violin Soloist

Alex Ayers was the Grand Prize winner of the 2006 Milwaukee Symphony Stars of Tomorrow competition, resulting in performances with the Milwaukee Symphony in May 2006 and February 2007. He performed the Dvorak violin concerto with the Milwaukee Summer Philharmonia in 2005, and he will be the featured soloist on a Waukesha Symphony subscription concert in November 2007. His violin studies began at the age of 3 1/2 with his mother, who plays in our orchestra, and his further studies have been with Darcy Drexler and Mimi Zweig. He will enter Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music this fall as a freshman, at age 16.
