What is Head Start?

Head Start originated in 1965 to provide free comprehensive child and family services to income and age eligible children and their families in collaboration with other community organizations.
Head Start's educational program is designed to meet each child's individual needs. All children in Head Start will benefit from a comprehensive health program, promoting preventive health care and assistance in establishing a medical home.

Head Start strives to empower families to become self-sufficient. Head Start families are assigned a Family Support Worker to assist them in developing a Family and Community Partnership.
Parents are encouraged to utilize the on-site Parent Resource Center, located at 1032 Grand Avenue in Racine. Computers, videos, resume writing, instructional books, and access to the Internet are available.
Parents are the key to success in Head Start. As members of the Parent Center Committees and the Head Start Policy Council, parents help decide how the program is operated. Parents are invited to volunteer in all phases of the Head Start program at any time.
