CAMP AMMON…A BRIEF HISTORY

 When Camp Ammon began in 1933 there were 300 Scouts who stayed within the camp and over 20,000 Scouts visited during the Fair. They gave demonstrations of scoutcraft and participate in parades. The scouts operated 17 scoutcraft booths in the junior fair and served as guides, messengers and aides to the fairgoers. This was intended to be a one-time event, but State Fair Director, Ralph Ammon, asked the scouts to come back in 1934 and Camp Ammon has been there ever since.

In the 1940 Scouts were nominated to attend the camp. The top three or four scouts were sent to represent their council and troop or Post specialty. In 1942, Milwaukee's Mayor, Carl Zeidler, while addressing the scouts at Camp Ammon, emphasized that they are the people upon whom our future depends.

In 1952 the Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts of Camp Ammon started serving as ushers in the Grandstand and at all official buildings on the fairgrounds. They also acted as guards at various animal points of interest, messengers and guides for distinguished guests, rendering over 5,000 hours of service during the Fair.

In the late 1960s, Girl Scouts were invited to attend Ammon and when the State Fair topped a million in

attendance for the first time, Camp Ammon was there to support the newly offered, free grandstand shows.

Today Camp Ammon has Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Venturers and Explorers. The campers still usher at Grandstand shows, and serve as guides and messengers. They greet fairgoers who enter the State Fair and at some of the Information Booths. They also read stories to fairgoers’ children at the Book Bus; help lead children’s events like the State Fair Mascot Challenge; comfort and assist children at the Lost and Found, and serve as the Color Guard for the daily State Fair Parade. In total,

 

Camp Ammon provides about 4,000 service hours during its 12 days of operation.

What Camp Ammon does most, is put the Scout Oath and Law into practice. Scouts at Ammon: Live and interact with Scouts from different cities and troops, as they work together and support each other (“On my Honor…”); Prepare for daily inspections and work as a team (“…I will do my best…”); Take time to make a difference for every person they meet while working at the State Fair (“…To do my duty, to God and my country…”); Know that they are accountable for their own actions (“…and to obey the Scout Law...”); Giving of themselves through volunteering the time (…to help other people at all times…) Leading by example at all times (To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”).
