1. Peter Castner 1, 2, 3 was born on 23 Jun 1733 in prob Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He died on 24 Sep 1819 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Gilmore Cemetery, Donora, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
Kassner, Joh. Michael, b. 15 Nov 1769; parents Peter and Magdalena; Baptismal records., Heidelberg Lutheran and Reformed Congregations, Heidelberg Township, Bucks/Northampton/Lehigh County, Humphrey, John T., Pennsylvania Births, Lehigh County, 1734-1800, Heidelberg Lutheran and Reformed Church, Heidelberg Township.
The sponsors at the baptism of the eldest child of Peter and Magdalena Castner on December 17, 1769, were "Michael Ruch and wife Rosina," according to the Church Record - 1758 to 1850, copied and arranged from the original by Raymond E. Hollenbach, Seegersville, Pennsylvania, August 1933. The Hollenbach record lists the parents as "Kassner (?), Peter and Magdalena," and the child as Joh. Michael, b. Nov 22.
The Heidelberg Union Church exists today at the same location, which is exactly 17.36 miles as the bird flies from the Moselem Springs, Richmond Township, Berks County, the place of marriage in 1745 of Michael Ruch and Anna Franzina Merkel, per the Phil Knox Ruch/Rugh genealogy. Heidelberg Church is 14.97 miles from Macungie in Bucks (now Lehigh) County.
Peter Ruch alone was sponsor 1 Apr 1783, in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, of the baptism by Baltzer Meyer of Peter and Magdalena's daughter, Christina.
Credit Carol Herrity, reference librarian at the Leigh County Historical Society, performed the research. She found no other documentation of "this family" in the Society's collection. It is not clear which spelling variations she researched. She said early marriages were not recorded in this church record.
No doubt Rosina is Franzina.
Peter married Mary Magdalena (pos. Ruch) on 27 Oct 1767. Mary was born about 15 Mar 1745/1746 in Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania alt Whitehall Township, Northampton/Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. She died on 23 Nov 1830 in Stubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio. She was buried in Two Ridge Cemetery, Stubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio.
Peter's wife is recorded as Magdalena in the record of the baptism of their son, Joh. Michael, in 1769 at Heidelberg Union Church, Heidelberg Township, old Bucks, now Lehigh, County, and also in the records of the baptisms of their children, Maria Catherina, Johannes, Elizabetha and Christina, by Baltzer Meyer at Harrold's Lutheran Church, Sewickley Creek settlement, Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County. However, on 28 Dec 1778, she made her mark to Mary Castner on the deed from her and Peter to William Jack. Deed Book A, p. 160-161, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. It is likely her name was Mary Magdalena.
Sponsors at the baptism of Joh. Michael 17 Dec 1769, were "Michael Ruch and wife Rosina" (Franzina). Sponsor of the baptism of Christina in 1783 was Michael Ruch. Michael and Franzina Ruch were said to have married in 1745 at Moselem Springs, Richmond Township (ZION (MOSELEM) LUTHERAN CHURCH ","Richmond Twp., Berks County (ca 1730-)?).
Mary Magdalena possibly was a half sister of Michael Ruch. According to the research of Phillip A. Knox [http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=pknox&id=I38] Hans George Ruch was the father and Catherina Reiss was the mother of Michael Ruch, who was born 5 Jan 1722/1723. Hans George Ruch married Catharina Burkhard abt. 1685, which marriage produced Mary Ruch, b. abt. 1739 in Whitehall Twp., Northhampton/Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Whitehall Twp. is contigious to Heidelburg Twp., where Michael Ruch served as baptismal sponsor for Joh. Michael, the first child of Peter and Mary Magdalena Castner. This linkage is circumstantial, not documented. However, the fact that Michael Ruch also served as baptismal sponsor for another child of Peter and Mary Magdalena Castner on the western Pennsylvania frontier in 1783 suggests a more than casual acquaintance between him and the Castners. The Phillip Knox report conflicts with other reports of the birth of Mary Magdalena Castner as abt 1745/1746, Richmond Twp., Berks County. In the one case, Mary Magdalena would have been abt. 25 years old at the birth of Joh. Michael and, in the other case, abt. 30 years old. There is no record confirming whether Joh. Michael was her first born child.
Peter and Mary had the following children:

Michael Castner, grandfather of Thomas P. Spencer, Esq., who built a mill at the head of Wills Creek at the beginning of the century, was on the site of Steubenville while it was a wilderness—before the place was considered as a town-site. He owned a store on the Monongahela River and one in Kentucky, riding on horseback from one to the other, and going through this region, he frequently stopped on the site of Steubenville. He bought a thousand acres of land in what is now Island Creek Township, and he was one of the pioneer merchants of Steubenville. He built the large brick dwelling near Two Ridge Church, now occupied by Dr. John Kilgore, and his remains are interred in the graveyard nearby.
