It is likely her name was Mary Magdalena. 2 CONT 2 CONT Sponsors at the baptism of Joh. Michael 17 Dec 1769, were "Michael Ruch and wife Rosina" (Fra 2 CONC nzina). Hans George Ruch married Catharina Burkhard abt. 1685, which marriag 2 CONC e produced Mary Ruch, b. abt. 1739 in Whitehall Twp., Northhampton/Lehigh County, Pennsylvani 2 CONC a. Whitehall Twp. is contigious to Heidelburg Twp., where Michael Ruch served as baptismal s 2 CONC ponsor for Joh. Michael, the first child of Peter and Mary Magdalena Castner. This linkage i 2 CONC s circumstantial, not documented. However, the fact that Michael Ruch also served as baptism 2 CONC al sponsor for another child of Peter and Mary Magdalena Castner on the western Pennsylvani 2 CONC a frontier in 1783 suggests a more than casual acquaintance between him and the Castners. Th 2 CONC e Phillip Knox report conflicts with other reports of the birth of Mary Magdalena Castner a 2 CONC s abt 1745/1746, Richmond Twp., Berks County. In the one case, Mary Magdalena would have bee 2 CONC n abt. 25 years old at the birth of Joh. Michael and, in the other case, abt. 30 years old 2 CONC . There is no record confirming whether Joh. Tom Heslep came over the old trail from Philadelphia 1769. He ha 2 CONC d land surveyed that had been purchased from a family named Proctor. Tom settled his famil 2 CONC y on the 304 acres adjacent to the Castner acres and built his home near where 10th street no 2 CONC w stands. Tom, who was a captain in the militia, fought in the Revolutionary War. It appear 2 CONC s that Tom left much of the farming of the place at Horseshoe Bend to his two sons, John an 2 CONC d Thomas, for he was appointed to take account of the stores needed for the poor in West Fall 2 CONC owfield and Chester County. In 1778, he was granted $6,000 by the Superior Council to purcha 2 CONC se provisions for the Colonial Army in Chester County. 2 CONT Captain Tom Heslep’s claim to his land was disputed but in 1796 with 400 pounds 2 CONC , he had it patented. He then divided his property between his two sons, giving Thomas 118 a 2 CONC cres that would approximate the land between where 12th street and 15th street now stands. J 2 CONC ohn received the remaining acres. 2 CONT Camp meetings were later held near the river shore on the Heslep estate and thi 2 CONC s beach was a popular meeting place for the folks around the district. 2 CONT John Heslep had two sons in the War Between the States, Robert and George. Rober 2 CONC t was a captain and George a major in the 6th Company, 4th Division, 2nd Brigade of the Penns 2 CONC ylvania Militia.
