Dated March 15, 1777 and is a receipt that Jos Lindsay received 12 and 1/2 bushels of corn from Abraham Chaplin for use of the militia of Kentucky County in the territory of the commonwealth of Virginia at Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Cost 1 pound, 7 shillings.

Appears to be a regimental list of company staff officers with statistical data for number of men by rank of colonel, major, lieutenant, ensign, adjutant, sergeant major, sergeant, and drummers. Difficult to identify all ranks. Can identify 8th of part of a regiment. The list indicates there were [?] staff officers of 1 colonel, 1 major,and 1 adjutant. The only names listed are for 8 captains but only the following 6 names were identified as captains: Dark, Clark, Westfall, Stephenson, Croghan and Barry. The columns of the chart listed number of soldiers by rank for each captain's company. The largest figures, which can be recognized are 108, 111, and 123.

27-1-44-47-Jan. 2, 1778: Williamsburg, Va. order of instructions of Patrick Henry to Lt. Col. George Rogers Clark to raise 7 companies of soldiers with 50 men each and officers for purpose of attacking the British fort at Kaskaskia. The destination of the expedition was to be kept a secret. The capture of the fort would provide artillery stores, provisions and ammunition. Transportation of troop was to be provided by boats from Fort Polk. Capt. Smith of Fort Polk was informed of the expedition. Clark was advised how to treat British, Indians and others, who might come under his control. Clark was made a commander of the corps which would be considered a militia of Va. References to a new garrison to be set up at Kaskaskia; France; Spain; Indians; and local inhabitants. The fort was to be established near the mouth of the Ohio River. Clark was to apply to General Hand for powder and lead for the expedition. There is a reference made to Capt. Lynn's dealing with a person (probably Oliver Pollock) for supplies in New Orleans. Microfilm copy of document was made from a Feb. 18, 1860 facsimile of Patrick Henry's Letter.

The flags were made for the fort and for several nations of savages or Indians. There were expenditures for paper and powder used in the festivities. Two flags were of blue serge and one flag was cut up for the weathercock. One half pound of cotton yarn was purchased as well as 300 pounds of flour. A baker was paid for making bread. Six empty barrels were purchased from a cooper. Jugs of rum for the festivities of the flag were given to the militiamen and 45 jugs of rum were given to the savages in the council. Three pounds of bullets were purchased for the guards. Other names appearing in the statement were Monsieur Enathien, Gibault and Passant. Authorization for payment of $22.50 was given by John Bowman.

Document 265 is the original Clark letter.-1-380 which is the verso of the packet of three Documents indicated that the letters were sent by Rapicault to Clark. George Rogers Clark acknowledged receiving copies of the Gazettes by Monsieur Ceree, which were written in Spanish and indicated that he was waiting for a person to translate the contents. Letter made reference to a verbal message of Sieba conveyed by Monsieur Vego about a dispute concerning Clark's bills of exchange, credit and authority. Clark referred to Oliver Pollock as an agent for the United States as well as for the state of Virginia and Clark's authority based on orders from the Executive Power of Virginia and to a Continental charge agreeable to an act of conspiracy and his authority for acting in the country. Clark reminded Sieba that bills of credit were to be paid by the Continent or state of Virginia and gave reference to Governor [Patrick Henry]. Letter also mentioned desertion of two soldiers, who had taken rifles and crossed the Mississippi to Ste. Genevive where they were disarmed by (?) Cartabona, who notified Clark but refused to send the soldiers back. Clark indicated concern for such desertion, which was detrimental since he had "raw troops". Clark requested a reply from Sieba.
