RESULTS FROM SECOND ROUND OF THE 2000 APBA PLAY-OFFS

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Hickory vs. Redford (3-1 Hickory)

Alonzo Mourning caused fits for the Crawdads as Redford wins the first game 92-81.  The Admiral, Geiger, and Mo Taylor all pick up 3 fouls in the first quarter and the Admiral fouls out early in the 4th to seal the fate of the Dads.  Scoring 29 points in the 2nd half did not help them either.  Redford goes to the line 46 times compared to 22 for Hickory to be the deciding factor.

Game # 1 Eastern Conference Second Round
Redford 25 20 23 24 92
Hickory 26 26 17 12 81
GAME # 1 BOXSCORE

Hickory ties the series up 1-1 as Uncle Cliffy Robinson scores 28 and they hold Zo to only 4-13 from the floor.  Hickory at times had a 25 point lead late in the 4th until some late press got the game back down to 13 at the end.

Game # 2 Eastern Conference Second Round
Redford 26 16 23 12 77
Hickory 31 21 24 14 90
GAME # 2 BOXSCORE

A missing persons report was filed today after this game looking as Hickory crushes Redford 128-90.  ZO, where are you???  With a constant double team in his face, Alonzo put up this wonderful stat line.  5 points on 2-8 shooting, 1 of 3 from the charity stripe, 9 TO's, and of course, he fouled out early in the 4th.  NICE work Zo.  For the winners, Gary Payton led all scorers with 29 points.  The losers were led by Doug Christie with 24.  31 TO's did not help Redford either as it allowed Hickory to put 5 players in double figure scoring.

Game # 3 Eastern Conference Second Round
Hickory 32 41 35 20 128
Redford 21 38 15 16 90
GAME # 3 BOXSCORE

The missing persons report worked as Zo showed up for this game, but his team must have been too tired from carrying his ass the game before and fall to the Crawdads 113-89.  7 players score in double digits for the Hickory squad, led by Paytons 33.  Alonzo poured in 28 points but his critical misses in the 3rd quarter from the line when the lead was cut to 8 really killed them.  He finished 9-17 from the stripe.  The Crawdads will make their 2nd ECF appearance in the last 3 years.

Maybe it was the long lay-off or maybe they're early risers, I don't know, but both teams struggled in the first half of this Titanic see-saw struggle.  The Panthers led at half by 3 despite shooting 38%.  Rex "the wonder-dog" Walters provided huge relief minutes for the Panthers stroking 12 points in 10 minutes despite a close defense.  Saratoga owned the middle quarters, out-balling Michigan, 57-40 in that stretch to lead by 8 heading home.  The Panthers answered the bell "Laker"-style by puting the wood to the Breds in the 4th quarter by posting a 40-spot.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Southern Ohio vs. Wisconsin (3-1 Southern Ohio)

Too much Shaq-Daddy and Ewing as the Nights Owls give way to the superior inside tandem of the Storm.  Wisconsin only trailed by 4 at half, but a 19-6 run to open the 3rd quarter buried the Owls.  Scottie Pippen wasn't too shabby with 20 points and 6 steals of his own as his floor presence squashed any hopes of an Owl revival.

HE GOT GAME!  Ray Allen put the Night Owls on his back in game #2 but it was a Chris "Gym Rat" Mullin jumper and an ensuing defensive stop on former Milton great, Scottie Pippen, that sealed a 16-point come-from-behind victory.  Down by 2 with 39 seconds to go, Ray Allen calmly splashed his 3rd 3-ball of the 4th quarter to put the Owls up by 1.  Del Curry answered with a spot-up 2-ball with 21 seconds to go that set the stage for Chris Mullin's heroics.

Wisconsin 23 15 20 33 91
Southern Ohio 23 24 22 21 90
GAME # 2 BOXSCORE

Commander Gale of the Wisconsin Night Owls ordered a terrential downpour and "gail" winds for game day in attempt to keep surrogate Storm Coach Frank Prather from arriving safely at the game.  However, his plans were for naught as the determined coach made his way to the stadium despite the weather conditions.  In the game, Southern Ohio put on the defensive pressure in the second period to open the score up to a 15 point advantage.  The Night Owls came "storming" back, but couldn't get any closer than 4.  Shaq didn't do much on offense, 16 points and 6 boards, but his defensive presence was felt, holding Barkley to 5 of 23 shooting.  Ewing played a crucial role down the stretch as he became the go-to guy in the 4th, being guarded by Barkley.  Patrick finished with 15 points.  Scottie Pippen also played big as the game's high scorer with 20 points and added 7 rebounds.

Game # 3 Western Conference Second Round
Southern Ohio 21 24 19 27 91
Wisconsin 20 16 28 19 83
GAME # 3 BOXSCORE

The tempo was much different this time around, but the result was the same as the Storm win the series 3 games to 1.  The second quarter again hurt the Night Owls, but they stayed in the contest despite that, and even held a lead during much of the second half.  The Storm went on a run, fueled by Strickland (14 assists) and Pippen (9 assists) dazzlers.  With less than one minutes to go, Wisconsin knocked down two treys (one by Allen, one by Hornacek) to cut the lead to 3.  Rather than fouling with 2 seconds to go, the Night Owls decided to go for the steal.  The plan worked to perfection, as the Big Dog stole the ball from Scottie, pulled up from 45 feet, and knocked down the apparent game tying 3-ball.  However, the refs ruled that the shot came a split second after the buzzer and the home crowd went bizerk.  Coach John Storer needed an army of bodyguards to get him out of Milwaukee safely.

California vs. Lake Grant (3-0 Lake Grant)

A tight affair in the first half as Lake Grant led most of the way, but California kept it close.  Grant Hill hits a half courter to end the half with the Gold Rush only down 5.  The Cabin Boys open it up in the fourth quarter, leading by 21 at the high water mark.  The Gold Rush come back in the fourth, cutting it under 10 twice, but can never get closer than that.  Karl Malone was large for the Boys with 30 point and 10 boards.  Vlade showcased as well with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, and damn was he looking good with a fresh haircut before the game.  No Gold Rush player topped 15 points, though 4 hit that mark.  Grant Hill was saddled with foul trouble most of the game and only logged 28 minutes.

Lake Grant dominated the first half behind Karl Malone's quick start.  He scored 24 first half points, including 10 for 10 from the line.  As a team, Lake Grant was 17 for 18 from the line in the first half.  Lake Grant extended their 15 point half time lead to 23, early in the third.  But California came back to cut it back to the half-time deficit by the end of the third.  An early surge in the fourth got the lead all the way down to 3 with just under 6 minutes to go.  But the Gold Rush ran out of gas, and Lake Grant opened it back up late in the game.  Malone was held in check during the second half, partly due to a double team.  Vlade Divac had a big game with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assists.  Grant Hill was large for California with 39 points on 17 of 28 shooting, and this after he started the game 0 for 5.

California came out of the gate smoking, looking to get back in this series.  They carried an 11 point lead into the locker room at half.  However, foul trouble plagued the Gold Rush throughout, and eventually led to their demise as Grant Hill fouled out late in the third and Kemp early in the fourth.  The Cabin Boys took over in the fourth, going on a 17-4 run before California was able to put on the press and make the final look close.  Tom Gugliotta led all scorers with 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting before departing with 6 fouls of his own.
