TOM'S FUN WITH COMPUTERS AND HTML

Tom first worked with computers in 1967, when he worked on a 4K IBM 1130. "When we went to 8K, they had to bring it in a dump truck," Tom recalled. Tom's fantasy with the machines was rekindled in the late 70's, when he found a Commodore 64, with 64K. He then moved into various PC's and now uses a 486 machine with multimedia and a Pentium machine, each with 28.8 modems.

How Tom Built This Home Page

Tom did all the writing and HTML programming of these pages after reading just one book, Creating Cool Web Pages With HTML, by Dave Taylor (IDG Books, 1995), which cost $19.95. Tom first hand-drafted the pages, then revised them on WordPerfect 6.1 and 8 for Windows. Tom expected to use the WordPerfect Internet Publisher, but found it too slow. Tom scanned some of the pictures using an HP Scanner. Others were scanned by a friend.

After preparing all the files, the whole thing was uploaded to Tom's Internet provider, ExecPC.

The whole project took about 20 hours and was lots of fun!

Tom says, "The whole power of the Internet is in knowing how to search." Tom's favorite search engines are:

Through his surfing, Tom has a favorite site, which has replaced his need to read local news:
