Helen Birkemeier lives with her husband of 54 years on their farm near Spring Green, Wisconsin. They took on the role of foster parents as their own children matured, and she found herself acting as teacher, nurse, occasional counselor, and lifelong friend.

A Catt in Our House tells the story of their youngest foster daughter, Catt, chronicling her early difficult years in a Milwaukee foster home, her extensive medical procedures, and her amazing resilience in becoming an independent adult who is a productive member of society.

Helen also writes a weekly column in the local newspaper, A Woodland Walkers Guide, describing the wildlife she observes on trails around the farm. She compiled a book from the stories in 1998, Timbergreen Trails, which is currently being reworked, and will release a second volume of new stories in the spring. You may reserve the set or either book by clicking here.

In her other life, she has served as a music therapist and organist, and is a wildflower propagator and vendor.
