The Blue Mountain Principles - November 6, 1999
developed by a coalition of forest owner alliances promoting sustainable forestry
(This is my personal summary of a recent meeting held in the Adironacks)

1.  Forest owners will organize to form small local groups that will own and control their community forest resource management operations.

2.  Landowners will be empowered and encouraged to actively manage their resources by sharing practical information and gaining economies of scale.

3.  Forest owners will work together to practice future oriented resource management that meets Forest Stewardship Council Certification Standards on a landscape level.

4.  Small amounts of timber can be carefully harvested on a regular basis to provide steady income for the forest owners.

5.  Low impact logging methods and equipment will be used to protect the future productivity of the forest.  Professional safety training is required for all forest workers.

6.  Ecological restoration will be encouraged and environmental protection is required during management projects and wood processing.

7.  Local value-added processing  and creative marketing will increase the forest owner's net income as well as build the local economy and support the community.

8.  Forest Stewardship Council Certified wood products will be sold directly to consumers where possible and extra products may be marketed regionally, then globally through an Alliance of local groups.

9.  Educational programs for local group  members and the public will be held on a regular basis.

10.  Local groups will openly cooperate on a national basis to share useful information for the good of all  forest owners.
