Horse Logging and Sustainable Forestry:
a traditional method becomes a new favorite.

Trees that are near the edge of the forest can often be skidded out full length.  When skidding long lengths will do excessive damage to future crop trees, logs should be cut into shorter pieces before moving.  This may take extra time, but the long term benefits are worth any extra cost.  Skidding damage is the most common problem during logging, and this is a very good answer for forest owners to consider.

We are working with two full time logging crews using horses.  Every forest owner that sees the horses work wants to hire them do their logging.
The perfect crew would be a skilled feller, a team of horses to drag the logs to the nearest woods trail, and a pre-hauler to pick up the logs and carry them out of the woods.  Logs would be sorted and pile neatly for easy trucking.  We are working on this system...
