SALVAGING A FALLEN GIANT

During one break period, one hundred forty growth rings were counted, dating this tree back to settlement times here, when the prairie fires stopped and the forests sprung up to occupy the steep hillsides.  Nearly all of this trees peers have fallen to the saw and skidder over the years.  An occasional mis -shapen or rotten tree still stands, but it is very rare to find a red oak of this age still producing merchantable timber.
