What a Difference a Fence Can Make!!

On one side of the fence line, the timber has just been high-graded for the second time.    All the merchantable trees were again cut out, leaving the undesirable, worthless, broken, bent over, rotten, deformed and ugly trees to perpetuate the forest for the future.  Too much shade is still present for trees to regenerate well, and grazing of deer and cattle will probably remove most desirable seedlings before they have a chance to reach for the sky.  The stumps are the remaining evidence that this was once a productive forest.  They will now slowly rot away in the midst of all the prickers and thorns now thriving.

Its not the fence that makes the difference - its really the Forest Owner who determines the fate of their timber.
A wise owner learns to manage their resource carefully. Timber price trends, growth rate monitoring, crop tree management, low damage logging techniques, full utilization of harvested trees, timber stand improvement, natural regeneration of desirable species and other topics are important for landowners to be familiar with.
Whether you work with a professional forester or not, it is up to the forest owner to make the right decisions regarding the future of the timber on your side of the fence.  Actions impact the next 100 years - be careful!
