Super Solar Cycle Kiln Raising Workday

December 4th, 1999 was the date of a remarkable cooperative effort that took place in Lone Rock, WI.  Members of the Sustainable Woods Cooperative, Inc. of Spring Green joined forces to work on a variety of projects at their new wood processing site.  Two dozen SWC members and a dozen visitors worked together for a common goal.

Russ Moody (right) shares his wood engineering experience with helpers from the Atwood Community Center in Madison.  These teenagers spent the day on site helping will all aspects of the project.  Black locust 6X6 poles are being prepared to support the kiln structure.  Blocks of wood are spiked to the base of the poles to prevent uplift from frost action.

Everyone, lift on Three!!  One, Two....

SWC members raise the back wall of the kiln chambers into position.  The Super Kiln will have three solar heated rooms that will dry lumber to 6% moisture content.  Solar kilns produce very high quality lumber and are ideal for local cooperatives.

OK, hold it right there!

A calm day was appreciated as workers raised the walls and poles for the kiln.  Nice temperature too, for December in Wisconsin.  Every person found a place to contribute to this work day, and many learned some new things about trees and wood processing.
