The following is from a presentation by Nobuyoshi Kitamura and Becky Torrisi of the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering to the students on April 26, 2002.

Amazing Laws of Electricity and Magnetism

Our modern life relies heavily on technology, a large part of which, in turn, relies on electricity and magnetism.

Technology:

Application of our knowledge of natural laws, such as those concerning sound waves, light, electricity and chemical reactions.

No matter how advanced a technology is, it can never violate the natural laws.

Science:

Efforts involving experimentation and reasoning to find the simplest and most important ideas that explain nature.

Not a single basic law of electricity and magnetism has been discovered for over one hundred years. Scientists are confident that we have a complete theory of electricity and magnetism. Remember, no sophisticated technology can cheat that!

Today, we will conduct a series of experiments using wire, batteries, magnets, and almost nothing else.

Truth is truth, no matter how humble the means of discovery is.
