Visually, "The Lion King" is one of the most stunning productions ever mounted on Broadway. Elephants march down the aisle, giraffes lope across the stage, gazelles leap and gambol, beasts stampede. Of course, they're not real--there are people under and in these wildly impressive, witty, and endlessly ingenious animal creations (costumes by Julie Taymor, masks and puppets by Taymor and Michael Curry). The beauty and appeal of these marvels are matched by the grandeur of Richard Hudson's scenery and Donald Holder's lighting.
