CHESTER SHEARD

Silk DukeDuke and Band

Chester took these photographs of Duke Ellington in Chicago (left and right) and at the Newport Jazz Festival (center). That silk jacket says it all for the elegance of America's premier jazz event! The man on stage with Duke in the left photograph is none other than Steppin Fetchit. Duke Ellington introduced him to the audience with elan, but the audience, even in the days before "political correctness", reacted with a hush, uncertain of what to make of this gesture. All of the photographs were included among the 39 in Chester Sheard's exhibit "They Made a Difference", held at KM art, April 17-May 29, 1999.

Ella

Chester Sheard was all over the place. From left to right, Pete Seeger at the Poor People's Campaign, Washington D.C.; the immortal John Coltrane, in an image that was used for the cover of his 1972 Infinity LP; a very soulful Ella Fitzgerald.
