The American Stock Exchange has made it possible to trade the Dow Jones Industrials Index.
It is also possible to trade the S&P 500 (SPY) and the NASDAQ 100 (QQQ) indexes.
This is accomplished by the creation of trading stocks that mirror the movement of the actual index. These trading stocks are investment trusts that contain the actual stocks that make up the underlying index.

The Dow Jones investment trust (DIA) is referred to as "the Diamonds." It is structured to represent 1/100 of the actual index. That is, when the Dow is 11,000, the DIA is 110. For every 100 point movement in the index, the price of the DIA moves one dollar.
