Started by Charles Dow and Edward Jones in 1896, the average consisted of 12 companies, many of them railroads. The first measurement, of the now famous average, was 40.94. It was 70 years before the average finally touched the 1000 point level. It took another six years to close above 1000, and another 10 years, after that, to pass through in a decisive fashion.
