Rationale for Internet Exercise, Chapter 7

This site gives students a chance to test what the creator of the site calls their "leadership I.Q." While this is not an objective measure of a student's insight into leadership behaviors, it does provide some useful feedback on how leaders understand situations and act in different circumstances. The questions here should be a good basis for a class discussion on what distinguishes leaders that they admire and might want to become. The second site includes a concise list of ten characteristics that distinguish leadership. It will help students further understand leadership behaviors.

  1. Why are humility and looking out for others important characteristics of leaders?

Having the strength to admit ignorance is an effective personal asset. Learning can be used as a tool for progress. Looking out for others shows people that you really care for them and believe that they can succeed.

  2. How does taking the systems view of organizations help you better understand the role of behaviors of a leader?

A leader is not only someone who can inspire others to work toward a cause but someone who understands the corporate vision, who understands how he or she and the team fits into that vision, and how to manage processes in order to achieve that vision. A leader, therefore, must practice certain behaviors that drive that progress.

  3. Do you agree with all of Murphy's answers to the questions on this quiz? If yes, why do you think he is correct? If not, why not?

This question is designed to get students thinking about these ideas in terms of their own experience and and understanding of the ideas in the chapter.
