Recertification

unlike diamonds, not everything is forever...

 

Cisco:

CCNA certifications are valid for three years. To recertify, either pass the current CCNA exam, or pass the ICND exam, or pass any 642 professional level or Cisco Qualified Specialist exam (excluding Sales Specialist exams), or pass a CCIE written exam on or after October 1, 2004.

Most other  Cisco certifications are valid for two years.

 

CompTIA:

CompTIA certifications are lifetime certifications.  Exams may be updated, but the certification holder does not need to the the upgraded exam.

 

Microsoft:

Microsoft no longer requires individuals to recertify.  It's certifications are now version based.

 

Novell:

Individuals who do not meet continuing certification requirements (CCRs) stay certified, but in Novell receives an inquirey about an individual's certification and they have not met the CCR, Novell will disclose that the individual has not been certified in the most recent technology.

 

ISC2:

After getting the CISSP you have to perform CPEs, which may be audited.
