January 12, 6:30 p.m., The Milwaukee Choristers will hold auditions for new members at Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church, 1529 Wauwatosa Av., where the 80-voice chorus holds its rehearsals. Dr. James B. Kinchen, Jr., Director of choral activities at the UW-Parkside, has been conductor of the Choristers since 1993. He will conduct the private auditions and advises that no prepared material is necessary and no appointment is required. A potential member must be a high school graduate or at least 18 years old. Singers accepted will join the Choristers in weekly rehearsals, from 7:15 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., beginning on Wednesday, January 19th, for their annual Spring Concert. February 3, 3 p.m. The concert in the UWM School of the Arts Recital Hall, 2400 E. Kenwood Blvd., features a unique program, with works by Mahler, Korngold, Copland, Bemstein, and Weill, as well as rarely heard songs written by Jewish composers during the interment in World War II concentration camps. For this concert, the UWM Vocal Arts Program, under the director of Jeffry Peterson, has assembled singers who include Kitt Reuter Foss, mezzo soprano; Assistant Professor Valerie Errante, soprano; Phil Webb, tenor (who will be seen in the Florentine's production of "Nabucco"); Assistant Professor William Lavonis, tenor; and Mary Elizabeth Williams, guest soprano (and UWM graduate student). Pianist Jeffry Peterson, associate professor, will accompany the singers. UWM hosts a related lecture preceding the concert at 1:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Golda Meir Library, 2311 E. Hartford Ave. A representative from the Florentine Opera Company will discuss Jewish music, particularly in the context of the company's upcoming production of Verdi's "Nabucco." No reservations are required for this free lecture. Tickets are $12 for the public and $6 for students and seniors, and are available through the UWM School of the Arts Box Office, 414-229-4308.

February 6, 3 p.m., Wisconsin Conservatory of Music International Arts Festival Concert. In a concert of Jewish music, vocalists Marlee Sabo and Kathleen Matts will be joined by pianist Elaine Bliss. September 8 deadline for Metropolitan Opera Auditions. The National Council of the Metropolitan Opera announces its Forty-Seventh Annual Auditions, and cordially invites qualified singers between the ages of 19 (20 for men) and 33 (through July 31, 2001) to participate. Rules and application forms may be obtained from Patricia Crump, District Director, 1245 Valley Ridge Dr., Brookfleld, WI 53005. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Singers should note the new rules for National Semi-Finalists and Finalists. The Eastern Wisconsin District Auditions will be held on October 21 at Carroll College in Waukesha. Last year prize money totaling $14,250 was awarded. Two or three co-winners will be chosen to represent the District at the Upper Midwest Regional Auditions in St Paul, Minnesota, on February 6, 2001. The first place winner will receive Regional prize money, and go to New York City early to prepare arias under the Metropolitan's artistic staff before auditioning in the Semi-finals on March 25.

December 8 and 9, 8 p.m. Milwaukee Choristers "He Is Born!” is the theme of this year’s Christmas Concert. The 80-voice chorus will present the concert at St. Monica Church, 5601 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Whitefish Bay. Advance tickets for the concert are available at $10 per person. The cost for individual tickets purchased at the door will be $12. Other options include a family ticket, which admits parents and all their minor children, for $25; and a senior or student ticket for $8. Advance individual tickets may be purchased from members of the chorus or by calling 414-355-8030. Dr. James B. Kinchen, Jr., a member of the music faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and the Choristers’ conductor since 1993, has programmed a wide variety of musical styles for the concert. Included are two of Francis Poulenc’s four Christmas motets; Herbert Howells’ arrangement of the 14th century carol, “A Spotless Rose;” a Brazilian folk song arranged by George L. Mabry; “O Nata Lux,” a 1997 work by Morten Lauridsen, composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale; David Mennicke’s new arrangement of “Patapan;” three selections written for the hit movie, “Home Alone,” with music by John Willians and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse; and Craig Courtney’s tongue-in-cheek work, “A Musicological Journey Through the Twelve Days of Christmas.” In all, Kinchen has programmed 16 selections. The entire program is posted on the Choristers’ web site. A free reception for all concertgoers will follow the concert.
