February 23, 2:30 p.m., Dr. Wallace Cheatham will be featured at the piano in William Grant Still's groundbreaking work entitled "Africa, An Opera," highlighting the upcoming Ad Hoc Ensemble's concert "African American Music" in conjunction with the 2003 International Arts Festival. Also featured on this program are three remarkable soloists, including Soprano Carol Haywood, who among her distinctions was the first African-American woman to grace the stage of the Skylight Opera Theater, will sing contemporary spiritual songs, Soprano Faye Watson Cheatham, who will perform a groups of songs entitled "Spirituals", composed by her husband, Dr. Cheatham, each one speaking to the presence of an angel, and a newcomer to Milwaukee's music scene, Tenor J. Mitchell, who will sing art songs by 20th Century African-American composers and "I, Too, Sing America" by Langston Hughes. The Ensemble will also sing traditional spirituals set by Dr. Cheatham and Nathaniel Dett, including a major work by Dett entitled "The Chariot Jubilee." We wish to assemble a choir of about 30 singers to go on this trip, and will have room for a few non-singing travellers as well.
