Beulah came from a pet store - we ‘rescued' her from that awful little cage. We could have gotten a nice show quality puppy from a good breeder for what we paid for her. When we got her home she had kennel cough and was full of worms. She grew up having health problems. She had extremely poor conformation - she could have been part whippet! She personified every reason not to buy a puppy from a pet shop. But at the time, we thought she was an improvement on our Samantha because Beulah was AKC registered! In hindsight, she was one of the worst specimens of the breed I have ever seen. But we never regretted buying her - not for a single day. We showed Beulah once at the local dog show (I cringe now when I think of it! What must the other basset people have thought of her?). The night before the show, shortly after she had her bath, she got into a package of 12 colored felt-tipped markers. She may have been registered as a red and white, but the day we showed her, she was a red, white, purple, green and orange basset hound! She earned her Companion Dog title in three straight shows with a HIGH score of 171-1/2 (it is necessary to have at least 170 out of a possible 200 points to qualify.) You'd have to agree she was a consistent worker! |
